Jack Russells found in ‘appalling’ conditions

FIVE puppies were among the 27 Jack Russell terriers, birds and poultry that were rescued by the RSPCA during a raid in the North Burnett region.

On Wednesday inspectors discovered the property was housing a large number of animals in conditions that "could only be described as appalling".

RSPCA Chief Inspector Daniel Young said the investigation was ongoing but what investigators have found was "extremely concerning".

The dogs, puppies and a galah were seized from the property and are now in the RSPCA's care.

"Whether you have one animal or, as in this case numerous animals, you have a duty of care to ensure that they're looked after," Mr Young said.

The RSPCA expect charges will be laid over the incident and have urged people purchasing dogs to check on the standard of care it is receiving.

"Often we see dogs in good physical condition living in environments that are far from acceptable, caring for an animal requires more than just providing sustenance," he said.

"They require socialisation, enrichment, treatment of disease or injury, and clean living conditions."

The Chief Inspector said having a large volume of animals does not exclude animal owners from having to provide basic necessities.

"It's easy to think that the happy clean and potentially healthy puppy you see advertised must come from a suitable environment," Mr Young said.

"Unfortunately, this isn't always the case, and the pictures and information on social media can be misleading."
