Rudd retirement allows leadership to move on: Rockhampton MP
KEVIN Rudd is a man many love to love and many love to hate.
The former prime minister announced on Wednesday night in Parliament he would retire from politics at the end of the week.
State Member for Rockhampton and Australian Labor Party member Bill Byrne paid tribute to Mr Rudd yesterday, saying he had made a significant contribution to Australian politics in the past 10 years.
"He has done the right thing in many ways and allowed a clean environment for the new leadership to move on and rebuild the party," he said.
Mr Byrne was humbled by the comments of those in the chamber that night, which he watched on television.
"From the Prime Minister (Tony Abbott) to others on both sides of the spectrum, and so it should be when a political warrior leaves public life," he said.
"Politics is never an easy enterprise for anybody.
"He contributed on a level that most never achieve. The cost of that effort was largely borne by his family.
"I wish him all the best in whatever he chooses to do in the future."
