MS miracle hopes others are able 'to run and walk and dance'

WHILE chatting to a friend over a cup of coffee, mum-of-two Amanda Grobbelaar felt a tingling sensation on her chin.

She didn't know it at the time, but this was an early symptom of multiple sclerosis.

She was diagnosed with the disease in June 2011, but she hasn't let it stop her from having, what she calls, a "full and happy life".

The 44-year-old is speaking out, and putting her best foot forward, to promote the LayZee Runners Mackay and Amanda Grobbelaar 5km Valentine's Day run this Friday.

She is using the run as practice for her first half marathon - as well as raising funds for MS research.

"I am one of the fortunate ones living with an MS diagnosis. I am a walking miracle," she said.

Ms Grobbelaar has a passion for medical research. Just 10 years ago, an MS diagnosis was a death sentence.

"Because of research there is now medication available to slow down, and in some instances halt the destructing debilitating path of MS," she said.

"Because of research I am one of the fortunate ones who qualifies for the oral medication.

"My hope and prayer is that a cure will be found soon, so that those who had been robbed of their abilities will be able to run and walk and dance."

You can get behind Ms Grobbelaar's event at the Metro Cafeat 6pm next Friday, or by donating at kissgoodbyetoms.org.

The run

  •  When: Friday, February 14 at 6pm
  •  Where: Metro Cafe, River Street, Mackay (near Bluewater Lagoon)
  •  Cost: $10 per person or $20 per family (payable on the day)
