Runaways stay close to home
AT Runaways Netball Club, the sport really is a family affair.
The Christensen family has three generations playing for the Rockhampton Netball Association, which celebrated its 30th birthday last year.
Kerry Christensen has been with Runaways for about 17 years and is joined in the club's ranks by her mum, Helen Christensen, and daughter, Zoe Brown.
"Our club is very family orientated, we have teams in almost every grade with our junior grades being very strong," Kerry said.
"We just play netball and we just love it."
Kerry is the current club president. Zoe joined this year.
"She is only six and is just so excited to finally be able to play netball," Kerry said.
"I can quote her exactly: 'oh mum I have been waiting for this for my whole entire life'."
The 2012 netball season will see the launch of a new competition called NetSetGo.
"Zoe will be playing in this competition as she is still not quite old enough to enter into the grade divisions," Kerry said.
"NetSetGo is an extremely modified game that focuses on coaching and learning the rules, rather than the competitive side."
Helen, 65, is still going strong, playing in the less competitive C-grade competition.
The Runaways Club held a store at last month's Sports Expo, winning the best site of the day and a $750 voucher for club development.
Pre-season training is to begin this week.
