ROCKHAMPTON Rustlers coach John Jenkins will have a clear idea of whether his side are 47th Battalion Trophy Carnival contenders by sunset on Saturday afternoon.

Rockhampton starts its three-match campaign against South West Country in Gladstone on Saturday morning.

Then it will meet the reigning champions Bundaberg, in their second match later that day.

The dominant side at the 2013 carnival, Bundaberg defeated Rockhampton 24-6 in last year's grand final.

Rockhampton and Biloela Panthers captain Peter Rogers is one of only a handful of Rockhampton players returning from last year's team, which registered a 16-12 win over Toowoomba and a comfortable 56-10 win over Central Highlands before the final.

Jenkins has added Panthers centre Ratu Tobia Viravu to his squad after a couple of eye-catching performances against Norths Chargers and Fitzroy-Gracemere Sharks in recent weeks.

At the 47th Battalion Carnival, Rockhampton will be joined by representative teams from Toowoomba, South West Country, Gladstone, Bundaberg, Central Highlands, Sunshine Coast and newcomers Northern Wide Bay.

Rockhampton meet Central Highlands on Sunday morning in their last round match before the final at 1.40pm.

Rockhampton under-20s meet hosts Gladstone in their first match of the carnival before playing Central Highlands on Saturday afternoon.

Four Rockhampton teams - South West Mustangs, Bundaberg, Capras, and Sunshine Coast - will make up the women's competition.
