Sam on course to live his dream

IT wasn't all that long ago that Sam Eaves was trying his best to win a few dollars and a beer or two playing golf against his mates.

Now he's giving winning a lot more cash his best shot - $100,000 was on offer when the 2011 Queensland PGA Trainee Order of Merit winner contested his first overseas tournament on the weekend.

The 23-year-old former Maryborough Golf Club champion, who finished his three-year Australian Professional Golf Association traineeship at City Golf Club in Toowoomba earlier this year, teed off in the annual Morobe Open at the Lae Golf Club in Papua New Guinea.

Not quite as exhilirating as the US or European tours, but everyone has to start some somewhere.

The tournament is part of the Australian PGA Tour and Eaves cashed in on the adventure.

He finished in a two-way share of 11th on seven-under, nine shots behind the winner, Victorian Josh Younger.

After firing rounds of 71, 68, 69 and 69 on the par 71 layout, Eaves said he had been pleased with the way he went in his first international event.

"I had four consistent rounds ... that always helps," Eaves, the oldest son of former Queensland open men's golf team captain Alan, said.

"I hit it OK. Playing in tournaments like this one can only help my game because the conditions are so different - I'm sure I'll learn from the experience."

Eaves, who was ranked the second best trainee in Australia when he finished his time, will get a chance to draw on what he learned in Lae later this week during the $130,000 Papua New Guinea Open at Port Moresby Golf Club.

He said he was looking forward to backing up in that tournament.

"I'm living the dream and I wouldn't swap what I do for anything," he said.

"I have the best job in the world. No matter how bad a day I'm having, I reckon being on the golf course is the best office in the world."

It seems being a touring pro in PNG does have its drawbacks though.

"I miss my fiancée Kimberly," Eaves, who only got engaged recently, said.
