Same-sex Australians with British partner can wed in Sydney

GAY and lesbian Australians will be allowed to legally wed their British partners in Sydney after a bill allowing same-sex couples to marry was passed in UK parliament.

Politicians tasked with working on a same-sex marriage bill for NSW welcomed the news on Wednesday.

The UK bill will allow same-sex couples to be married in both civil and religious ceremonies (where a religious institution has formally consented) in England and Wales.

In Australia, the British consulate in Sydney will marry same-sex couples where one party has UK citizenship.

Couples who have already wed in civil ceremonies will be allowed to convert their relationship to marriage.

A spokeswoman for the NSW cross party working group for marriage equality said the successful passage of the bill through the British House of Commons was "fantastic news for hundreds of same-sex couples".

She said the fact that British politicians from three major parties were allowed a conscience vote proved "that when all sides of politics work together, you can achieve a meaningful outcome for same-sex-couples" and sent a "positive message" to the NSW Government.
