THIS week for blog, we will be looking at this rare and extremely beautiful 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series.

The Black Series is basically a faster and more track-orientated version of the standard SLS AMG. We'll get more onto the main differences between the two a little later on, but for now lets look at some figures.

Sitting under that ginormous front bonnet is a naturally aspirated 6.3-litre V8 engine which can produce up to 464kW (622hp) at 7400rpm and 635Nm of torque (468 lb-ft of torque) at 5500rpm.

On the subject of weight, the SLS Black Series has the best power-to-weight ratio of any AMG Black Series model ever produced. It weighs in with a kerb weight of just 1550 kilograms, which means it's a huge 70 kilograms lighter than the SLS AMG.

Mated to the engine is a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which I must add in comfort mode is extremely smooth and relaxed, and also in Sport or manual mode is incredibly fast and precise. The power then gets sent to the rear wheels.

All of this means that the SLS AMG Black Series is capable of accelerating from 0-100 kilometres per hour in just 3.6 seconds, and it will keep accelerating until it reaches its top speed of 315kmh (196 miles per hour).

When looking side by side at the SLS Black Series and the standard SLS AMG, you can't help but notice that the original SLS looks a little... plain in comparison.

AMG sourced its design inspiration for the Black Series in their GT3 racecar, with its wide muscular hips, the carbon front canards and that gorgeous rear spoiler.

It's not all just for looks though; all of this aero increases the downforce dramatically.

The original SLS AMG was able to complete a lap of the world famous Nurburgring racetrack in exactly 7:40.00.

The SLS Black Series completed the lap almost 15 seconds faster, with a lap time of 7:25.67. That's faster than a McLaren 12C or even a Ferrari F12 Berlinetta.

The AMG bucket seats are also very supportive around the bends, but still extremely comfortable for long journeys.

This 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is one of only eight cars to have made it to Aussie shores, and when new they were selling for more than $700,000 AUD a pop.
