Scare for Swans as star pair is injured

CHAMPION Swans forward Lance Franklin and co-captain Kieran Jack should be available for the season-opener against Essendon on April 4 despite being taken to hospital during the NAB Challenge match against Greater Western Sydney.

Franklin was knocked out after clashing heads with teammate Gary Rohan in the opening 10 minutes of the match in Canberra yesterday, and Jack followed after copping a heavy blow to the stomach.

The Swans released a statement after the match saying the pair had escaped serious injury and had been cleared to return to Sydney with the team.

The incidents were indicative of the fierce nature of the clash which the Swans won by six points, 0.11.7 (73) to 0.9.13 (67), thanks to a snapped goal on the siren by Sydney midfielder Craig Bird.

The Giants also had an injury concern with winger Will Hoskin-Elliott taken from the field holding his shoulder in the final quarter.

GWS coach Leon Cameron said he was pleased with the physical way his players approached the game.

"We came here hoping we'd get through injury free, but also the intensity of the game would lift to close to an AFL standard, and we know the Swans always bring that," he said.

Giants forward Jeremy Cameron booted five goals in a return to his All-Australian form of 2013, while Callan Ward, Josh Kelly and Adam Treloar all got plenty of the ball.

Luke Parker was again tireless for the Swans, finishing with 29 disposals.

Meanwhile, Geelong was too good for a valiant Carlton at Etihad Stadium, running out winners by 19 points, 17.9 (111) to 2.10.14 (92).
