Scholarship is rock solid

THE Rock Building Society and Rockhampton Girls' Grammar School are offering one Central Queensland student an exceptional educational opportunity thanks to the launch of the inaugural 2010 Rock Building Society Scholarship.

Applications are being sought for The Rock Building Society General Excellence Scholarship, which has a strong community service and leadership focus, and is open to students who will be entering Year 11 in 2010.

The scholarship is the first of its type for Girls Grammar and further extends the reach of The Rock's extensive Community Support Program.

As chairman of Rockhampton Girls Grammar Board of Trustees, Phil Hancock explained: “At Girls' Grammar we provide a well-rounded education for girls from diverse backgrounds.

“Through the generosity of The Rock Building Society we are able to make a difference to the life of another deserving student.

“We are hoping to award the scholarship to a candidate who reflects the school's Learning for Life ethos.”

The Rock managing director Derek Lightfoot explained both education and youth were key focus areas for the organisation's Community Support Program.

“The Rock already supports a number of Central Queensland schools, sponsoring the likes of bursaries, academic awards and sporting teams. Offering this scholarship is an extension of this approach,” he said.

Mr Lightfoot said the new initiative stood apart from many academic scholarships due to community service and leadership being key selection criteria.

“This is why offering such a scholarship represents a wonderful 'fit' for both ourselves and Girls Grammar,” he said.

The inaugural scholarship will give the recipient access to a broad senior curriculum.

Interested students are encouraged to submit written applications, including a covering letter and supporting documentation, to: The Scholarship Committee, Rockhampton Girls Grammar School, PO Box 776, Rockhampton QLD 4700.
