Balcony stunt almost ends party

FOOLHARDY Schoolies risk life and limb with dangerous alcohol-fuelled antics as their week-long party continues on the Gold Coast.

Paramedics treated more than 150 school leavers for conditions including serious intoxication, drug side effects and accidental injuries during the first weekend of celebrations at Surfers Paradise.

The Queensland Ambulance Service said it had so far treated twice as many female patients than males.

A girl, 17, was taken to hospital with an injured foot after she crashed a moped on the Esplanade at 2.15pm yesterday.

Witnesses said the girl was knocked out for about two minutes and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

The Courier-Mail has received multiple reports of Schoolies ignoring repeated warnings and behaving dangerously on high-rise balconies.

One witness, who did not wish to be named, photographed several Schoolies sitting on the ledge of a balcony more than nine floors above ground at Focus Apartments at 4.30pm on Sunday.

"They were up there sitting on the edge and yelling and throwing things to each other between floors for more than an hour. It was definitely very dangerous," he said.

Another witness told The Courier-Mail security at Breakfree Imperial Surf Hotel were forced to intervene when several Schoolies were spotted climbing on the balconies of the sixth floor on Sunday night.

The former students' high-rise hijinks fly in the face of stern advice from police and event officials who have urged Schoolies to stay away from balconies.

Inspector Bruce Kuhn urged the public to report any dangerous activities to police.

"Any high-risk activity is concerning, anyone who is aware of it should report it to us immediately," he said
