Science centre opens at school

A NEW science centre has been officially opened at Wandoan State School.

The centre was made possible by a partnership between Xstrata Coal, Education Queensland and the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy.

It aims to improve pathways from senior school to work in industry for schools at Wandoan, Taroom and Miles.

The centre is a key initiative as part of the Xstrata Coal Wandoan Education Partnership.

Wandoan Coal Project general manager Bill McKinstrey is happy to see the school improvements.

"Funding for the centre includes hands-on science days with visiting experts, field trips and development opportunities, not just students but teachers as well," Mr McKinstrey said.

"We hope that initiatives under this partnership will give Wandoan students the skills they need to take advantage of the benefits and opportunities that will come out of the resource sector."

Wandoan State School principal Bryan Power is also excited about the partnership.

"This is a fine example of what can be achieved by the education sector and industry working together," Mr Power said.

"The school is looking forward to working together to help better the facilities offered."
