Pregnant mum chases pram thieves

A HEAVILY pregnant mother foiled a crime and scared off two would-be thieves at the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens.

But she was more shocked than them.

When two shameless teenagers tried to steal a pram carrying a handbag, camera and mobile phone, the six-months pregnant mother gave chase for 20 metres.

The two youths were so shocked they dumped the pram and continued running.

“It was adrenaline, actually I felt a bit stupid after,” she admitted.

The woman who chased the thieves asked not to be named for fear they may seek revenge on her and her 18-month-old son.

But she wanted her story to be told after she discovered her friend was the second victim of the thieves at the Botanic Gardens.

“I want people to be aware when they go there,” she said.

“They looked like they were about 16.”

The 31-year-old said she saw two teenagers watching her and her friend, who is due to give birth any day.

“They kept looking over at us, I knew they were going to do it,” she said. And as she turned her back to face her smiling son the cowardly thieves made the move she had been dreading.

“I saw them grab the pram and try and push it over the grass, and I just ran after them.

The two youths were so shocked they dumped the pram after 20 metres and continued running.

“They tried to push it away, but it was a good thing she had the brakes on,” the mother said. “She had everything in there.”

Police said it was the second time a pram was stolen last week.

Senior Sergeant Ben Carroll said the thieves took the handbag in the pram and then dumped the pram.

He encouraged people to be mindful of their property.
