Seeds sown except Look

NO. 1 Yurika Sema, of Japan, led the charge as all five seeds who played in the first round of the rich Bundaberg Women's International at Drinan Park yesterday progressed safely.

But two of the four Men's International seeds who took to the courts were beaten, including No. 2 Michael Look, who suffered the same fate at the hands of fellow Australian Maverick Banes at the same stage of last week's Ipswich International, losing this time in straight sets 7-5, 7-5.

With a world ranking of 176, Sema's class prevailed against Australian wild card Nina Catovic 6-2, 6-3.

Australian numbers two Isabella Holland and three Sacha Jones, Russian No. 6 Arina Rodionova and Japanese No. 8 Junri Namigata each had victories.

They accounted for Chieh-Yu Hsu (USA), Erika Takao (Japan), Hua-Chen Lee (Taipea) and countrywoman Chinami Ogi respectively.

The other three seeds, four Monique Adamczak (Australia), five Akiko Omae (Japan) and seven Sandra Zaniewska, of Poland, who won the Ipswich title on Sunday, will each have their first matches at the tournament when the first round concludes today.

Men's number six Isaac Frost was sent packing at the hands of fellow Aussie Andrew Harris but No. 3 Brydan Klein, the 2010 Bundaberg champion, and eight John Millman progressed.

Top seed James Lemke, of Victoria, will start his title defence today when fourth seed Sam Groth, who claimed the Ipswich men's crown three days ago, No. 5 Jason Kubler, the beaten Ipswich finalist, and No. 7 and 2009 Bundaberg victor Jose Statham, of New Zealand, will be in action.
