SEIZED: 4000 AK-47 rounds, guns buried underground

A CHICKEN coop on a rural Western Downs property was used to conceal thousands of AK-47 rounds, a cache of unregistered weapons and dangerous drugs.

Detectives from Major and Organised Crime Squad Rural searched the Daybreak Rd property at Tara where the items were located.

Police seized dried cannabis plants, packaged cannabis, cannabis seeds and located a 200L storage drum that had been used to conceal the cannabis underground on the property, police will allege.

Multiple six-inch PVC cylinders that had been used to bury and preserve illegal long-arm rifles were located as part of the systematic search of the 30-acre rural property.

Police also located multiple harvested cannabis crop sites and located in excess of 4000 full metal jacket SKS and AK-47 rounds.

A man, 70, was arrested and charged with possessing and producing dangerous drugs, possessing drug utensils, possessing unregistered and unsecured firearms and possessing a significant quantity of explosives.

The man will appear in Dalby Magistrates Court on August 15.

Deployments between July 12 to July 14 saw the execution of a further five search warrants at addresses in Tara, Condamine, Miles and Wandoan.

As a result police charged five people on 22 charges.

Three male offenders and one female were charged with an assortment of drug and Weapons Act charges and are set to appear in the Chinchilla Magistrates Court on August 3.

Detective Sergeant Mark Ferling of MOCS Rural said these operations were designed to keep the community safe from illegal substances and weapons.

"These types of operations in regional communities are a key focus of the squad, once again instinctive search techniques have removed more illegal firearms and ammunition from the hands of criminals," Detective Sergeant Ferling said.
