Senator calls for royal commission into defence abuse

INDEPENDENT senator Nick Xenophon wants a royal commission to investigate abuse in the Australian Defence Force.

Mr Xenophon said a Senate committee report into the process to support victims of defence abuse did not go far enough.

"Ultimately, Australia needs a royal commission into defence abuse because these allegations have been going on now for 50 years," he told ABC radio yesterday.

"Hundreds of men and women, boys and girls, have been abused while serving their country and it appears the systemic issues are still there and have not been addressed."

The committee looked at the abuse of boys at HMAS Leeuwin in the 1960s and 1970s and cases at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra in the 1990s.
