Sex slave case co-accused breaches bail

A woman charged over an alleged illegal prostitution ring along with her partner Matthew James Markcrow, 35, breached her bail "immediately" after it was granted.

Crystal Marie Sawyer, 23, appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court this morning and pleaded guilty to breaching bail.

Sawyer was granted bail on February 5 after being charged with conducting a business of unlawful prostitution. One of her conditions was not to contact certain people in relation to an ongoing "prostitution and servitude" investigation, the court heard.

On leaving the police watch-house that day Sawyer fled from waiting media and got in a black BMW containing a number of women she was not meant to contact.

Sawyer today told the court she was being chased by media but conceded she should not have got into the car.

"I was scared, I ran into the car, I realised I was wrong and I shouldn't have done that," she said.

Sawyer's substantive charges came after police raided a home in Brisbane's south in February where they arrested her partner Matthew James Markcrow, 35, who allegedly kept a number of women between the ages of 17 and 24 in conditions of servitude of unlawful prostitution.

Police alleged the women were given stupefying drugs, subject to controlled living, financial and work conditions. Several of the women had allegedly been tattooed "Property of Matt M".

Sawyer has been accused of assisting Markcrow but has not been charged with servitude offences.

Magistrate Elizabeth Hall today took into account Sawyer's early plea of guilty but also that she breached bail "immediately" after it was granted.

Sawyer was fined $200 and her bail continued.
