Shanavia is back as Cyclones shoot for three-peat
BASKETBALL: Shanavia Dowdell returns to the Frenchville Sports Club Cyclones this year as they shoot for a three-peat in the Queensland Basketball League.
The champion import will line up for her fourth season with the Cyclones after completing another highly successful season with her Belgium team.
Dowdell, whose resume includes an impressive list of awards including WNBL All-Star Five, QBL All-Star Five and QBL MVP, is excited about heading back to Rockhampton.
"The Rockhampton community and my teammates always make it so comfortable to play here. The Rocky fans on game night well they make it even better,” she said.
Dowdell will add some much-needed stability to a new-look Cyclones team that will be without five members of the team that claimed back-to-back championships last year.
"With a few players retiring after last year's championship there will be new challenges ahead in 2017 but the goal will be the same. We're going for three in a row which is a massive achievement in any sport,” she said.
Cyclones' coach Chris Muggeridge is elated to have secured Dowdell's services once again.
"Shanavia is such a quality player for our team as she controls play inside and is always an offensive threat,” he said.
"Last season she also showed us what a team leader she can be by mentoring and leading by example for our younger team members.”
Muggeridge said this would be the year for some of Rockhampton's emerging talent to shine with the Cyclones.
"We've got some great young talent coming through and they're definitely going to be on show this year.
"Even though we're in a rebuilding stage I'm very confident that we can back up our championship with the players that we've got in our squad.”
The QBL season starts in late April with a grand final rematch between the Cyclones and the Mackay Meteorettes at Hegvold Stadium.
