Sharing is the key to marriage

MERVYN and Jean Wright are celebrating their 65th anniversary today.

The couple first met during dance lessons at the Parish Hall in Mackay when Mervyn was 21 and Jean was 17.

They married on August 20, 1949 at the Central Methodist Church in Gregory Street.

Mrs Wright, a talented dressmaker, made her bridesmaids' dresses, the flower girls' dresses and also her mother's dress.

She wore a borrowed lace wedding dress, a floor-length veil and carried a cascading bouquet of fresh flowers.

Mr and Mrs Wright have lived in their home in West Mackay since October 1955. Many of the wedding gifts they received are still with them.

They believe the key to a long and happy marriage is sharing.

"We share our pastimes. Going fishing, crabbing and prawning are some of our favourites," Mr and Mrs Wright said.

The couple has four children, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

During their lifetime together they have noticed many changes in Mackay, including the growth of the neighbourhood where they've spent most of their married life and raised their children.

"We have seen the area go from cane paddocks to what it is today," they said.

They will celebrate their anniversary at an afternoon tea at their family home with close family and friends.
