Sharks found with fins removed

A MOFFAT Beach resident was upset to discover two metre-long sharks with their tails and fins removed on the banks of Tooway Creek at Moffat Beach earlier this week.

The woman was walking her ridgeback-cross-greyhound along the new walkway around 8.30am on Tuesday when her dog began pulling incessantly towards the edge of the creek.

“She was unusually keen to check out this smell so I followed her and came across the dead sharks,” the woman said.

“I’m no fishing expert but this just didn’t seem right. I’m guessing they were dumped there before daylight ... it didn’t look like they’d been there that long.”

An UnderWater World spokesman identified the sharks as juvenile bull sharks.

High tide had failed to remove the sharks and they remained in the same position yesterday.

A Fisheries Queensland spokeswoman said this was a case of shark finning, where the animal’s fins are removed and the body of the shark is thrown back in to the water.

“Not only is the practice of finning sharks and dumping their bodies illegal and wasteful, but it is simply inhumane to treat living animals in this way,” she said.

“Some shark fishing is legal in Queensland. However shark finning is illegal and will not be tolerated.

“Under Queensland legislation, anyone taking a shark fin must also retain the body of the shark. These rules are in place to act as a deterrent to targeting these animals for their fins alone.”

Penalties of up to $100,000 apply.

The spokeswoman said Fisheries Queensland had not received any previous reports of sharks washed up on Sunshine Coast waterways with fins removed.

Any illegal fishing activity witnessed by the public should be reported to the Fishwatch hotline on 1800 017 116 (toll free within Queensland).
