THE husband of missing Grafton school teacher Sharon Edwards has appeared in Grafton Local Court this morning on six firearms offences.

John Wallace Edwards made a brief appearance to set a date for a hearing on the charges stemming from police searches of properties he and his wife owned.

The searches were made after her disappearance last month.

Investigation upgraded to murder

Mr Edwards has not entered a plea to the charges, which include possession of more than three unregistered firearms, one of which is a pistol. This is a serious indictable offence.

He also faces four charges of possessing unregistered firearms and one of possessing ammunition without a licence.

There was a strong media presence at the court house this morning.

Mr Edwards sat in the court gallery initially. He was dressed casually, but his straggly locks and bushy beard have been trimmed. He was wearing a tie and a black leather jacket. Outside the court he wore a wide-brimmed black hat.

After sitting with his solicitor in court this morning, he left court house with her for about an hour. There was no explanation for their departure.

They returned shortly before 11am where the charges were mentioned and a hearing date set for July 6 in Grafton.

Police have stressed these charges are unrelated to their investigation of Mrs Edwards' disappearance after a night out at a South Grafton hotel on March 14.

After two weeks police upgraded the investigation from a missing persons case to murder and set up Task Force Burrow.
