Shilleto ready to rumble in Rocky after quick series start

DALE Shilleto is once again the one to catch.

Shilleto leads the Rocky Resort Motor Inn Rocky Rumble Series heading into round three at the Rockhampton Speedway tomorrow night.

A former Queensland and Victorian champion, Shilleto sits on top of the leaderboard after following up his second place in the first round of the season with a feature win in round two.

The 26-year-old driver, who hails from Maryborough, was determined to finish the 2013-14 season racing Formula 500s on top before he moves into sprint cars.

Shilleto grew up watching his father Chris race sprint cars and has always wanted to follow in his tracks.

"It's a new challenge for me. We've been (racing Formula 500s) for about 10 years now," Shilleto said.

"They're (sprint cars) the pinnacle of speedway racing everywhere.

"I remember going to the speedway as a kid and wanting to race sprint cars then."

A determined Shilleto said the move to sprint cars was one he had planned to make a few years ago, but work and family commitments stalled the move.

After two rounds of racing, Shilleto sits just ahead of youngster Cody Maroske, while Josh Pokarier had been impressive in the opening two rounds and was edging closer to the top.

Joining 16 other drivers, Formula 500 veteran Mick Pronger is making his first trip to Rockhampton this year.

The six-time Queensland title-holder and two-time Australian champion, Pronger shapes up as a genuine contender.

Six northern-based cars are venturing down from Cairns and Townsville with father and daughter duo Glen and Lexi Underwood leading the charge.

Fearless Lexi showed the men she meant business in round two with a daring four-wide pass around the outside.

Also joining the North Queensland contingent was Bayden Elston, Nick Scholes, Billy Foyle and Mark Davey.

Gladstone pair Adrian (AJ) Josefski and Tony Schmidt, in his new Stallard chassis, said they were looking to get as much track time in their new Formula 500s before next year's Australian Formula 500.
