Chinese man who deserted ship hands himself in

A CHINESE national who deserted his vessel in the Gladstone Harbour on April 27 is now in Sydney.

The man handed himself in to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection in Sydney on May 14.

He has been granted a bridging visa while his immigration status is resolved.

On May 7 the department confirmed the man's ship had left Gladstone and continued on its journey.

At the time, Outside Minister for the Mission to Seafarers' Gladstone, Russell Cunningham, said the Chinese national was most likely heading to a major city.
