Shoppers hold Maroochydore IGA cash-grab robber

A MAN has been arrested after he allegedly tried to grab cash from a till at an IGA supermarket in Maroochydore yesterday.

A shopper who was in the IGA Marketplace Wises Road store buying milk reported hearing a commotion at the front of the store around 4.14pm.

"There was yelling and then he jumped on the counter to try to steal money from the cash register," the shopper said.

"A few guys tackled him until the cops arrived."

Reports to police suggested the man, aged in his 20s, was armed with either a pair of scissors or a syringe, but this was unconfirmed late yesterday.

He was without a shirt when he was placed in a police vehicle.

"This guy - he wasn't very old, probably in his mid-20s to late-20s - looked like he was walking toward the door and all of a sudden he turned and tried to take the cash," the shopper said. Police investigations are continuing.

Staff at the store declined to speak about the incident.

One staffer did confirm that staff were not hurt during the incident.

A 29-year-old Maroochydore man has been charged with one count of armed robbery and two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm.

He is scheduled to appear before the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning.
