Shopping centre awarded for Cyclone Marcia efforts

IN THE days following Cyclone Marcia, Allenstown Square shopping centre opened its doors to the Central Queensland community.

The centre, which allowed people access to much-needed services, was recognised last month at a national awards ceremony.

Allenstown Square is owned by Charter Hall and their marketing manager Karlie Williams accepted the award on behalf of the local team.

Karlie said the local shopping centre was awarded first place in the community category.

"The team at Allenstown Square are honoured to receive the award," she said.

"Tropical Cyclone Marcia community initiatives were derived from the centre's passion to support the local Rockhampton community during the natural disaster recovery efforts."

The prestigious community award also came with a $2500 donation from the Shopping Centre Council to assist the Rockhampton community in continued recovery efforts.

Karlie said her team at Allenstown Square wanted the money to go towards the SES in Rockhampton due to the role they played after Cyclone Marcia.

"We are thrilled the win will see $2500 donated to the Rockhampton SES," she said. "Our thanks go to the Shopping Centre Council for making this generous donation."

Mayor Margaret Strelow will present the donation to the Rockhampton SES president tomorrow at a "thank you" morning tea.
