Sisters gave birth minutes apart

NEWBORN cousins Pria Hindle and Kailan Martin are too young to be competitive, but their race to be born first put a lot of stress on their grandmother yesterday.

Maureen Tomkinson didn't know which bed to stand by as her two daughters Tennille Hindle and Shona Martin were in labour in neighbouring rooms at Mackay Base Hospital.

She was kept on the run until the last minute, with the sisters giving birth just minutes apart: her grandson Kailan was born at 4.40am and her granddaughter Pria was born at 4.45am.

“It was very stressful,” Ms Tomkinson said.

“We have been joking (throughout their pregnancies) about Nanny running from one room to the other and that's exactly what happened.”

Ms Hindle was admitted to hospital about 7am on Monday to have her labour induced.

Ms Martin, whose baby was also overdue, went to the hospital to keep her sister company as she walked up and down the hallways.

“I came up here and did the hospital rounds with her, walking trying to bring it on for her, and it's obviously done it for me,” she joked.

Ms Martin was admitted on Monday night and was well advanced in labour when her sister realised she was also about to give birth.

Ms Hindle said hospital staff had sent her husband Mark home because it looked like nothing was happening.

“I woke up at about three o'clock (in the morning) because I was excited,” Ms Hindle said.

“I wanted to see what was going on with Shona but they told me to go and have a sleep.

“I thought ‘oh, these pains are starting to get a bit worse' but I was trying to keep quiet in the corner because I could see how much pain Shona was in.

“Then all of a sudden I went out and saw the midwife and said ‘I've got to go into my room' and within 45 minutes she (Pria) was out, five minutes after Kailan.

“Mark just missed it – he walked in about 30 seconds after she was born.

“We've joked the whole way through (our pregnancies) that Mum's going to be there, running from one room to another.

“It's happened, exactly as we joked about it.”

Yesterday, the sisters and their babies were surrounded by doting friends and family members, in a shared hospital room.

They were already talking about holding joint birthday parties throughout the years ahead.
