Six cricketers from Central Queensland in North Qld team

CENTRAL Queensland players dominated selection in the North Queensland under-17 team after the region's top young cricketers upstaged their more fancied northern rivals.

Six players were rewarded with North Queensland team selection after the region won the North Queensland Championships for the first time since 2011

Gladstone-based players Anthony Cogg, Ricky Sawyer, Harry Fordyce and Waqar Younis will join Gracemere Bulls quick Lachlan Knuth and Emerald's Mark Cupper in the North Queensland team which will meet South Queensland in Brisbane next weekend.

Central Queensland managed wins over Mackay in Rockhampton a fortnight ago and Far North Queensland at Mackay's Harrup Park on Saturday before falling short against Tropical North Queensland yesterday.

Central Queensland coach Greg Slatter, who will coach the North Queensland team next weekend, said he was pleased with the region's performance in the North Queensland Championships.

"They played really well in both rounds," Slatter said.

"In the first round they were excellent, yesterday they were excellent and today they went close but just came up short.

"Those six that made it were the standouts."
