Six hideaway bars to escape winter chill

The Gresham's charm will win you over before your first sip.
The Gresham's charm will win you over before your first sip.

THE last season of Game of Thrones finally uttered the words we've been waiting six seasons to hear and now that the weather has cooled down in Brisbane, "Winter is here."

So, get that one light jacket you own out from the back of the cupboard and head to one of these funky hideaway bars - the trendiest places to be seen this season.

Here's our favourites:

1. Black Bear Lodge, Fortitude Valley

A little bit difficult to find above the Brunswick Street Mall, Black Bear Lodge is the perfect bar to bunker in for the night and treat yourself to some live music. For a small cover charge you can enjoy up-and-coming acts and DJs while you sip on your drink of choice.

2. Bowery, Fortitude Valley

The Bowery is for those who are after a good time and a chat. This intimate, New York-style bar is one of the few places where the music doesn't overpower and you can still hear yourself think. You will find live jazz being played Tuesday to Thursday and DJs spinning at the weekend.

3. Brooklyn Standard, Brisbane City

Enjoy a slice of NYC-cool at live music venue Brooklyn Standard. Located underground on Eagle Lane, Brooklyn Standard hosts live music six nights a week specialising in jazz, funk and blues - all accompanied by a well-stocked bar of whiskeys and classic cocktails. And if you want to brave the "cold" Brisbane weather check out Chingon next door for your taco fix.

4. Greaser, Fortitude Valley

Take an adventure deep beneath the streets of Fortitude Valley to Greaser, a bluesy rock 'n' roll basement bar that you have to work to find. Make your way down one of Brunswick St's back alleys and you will find an ominous red door - the gateway to this grungy underground-bar. While you're enjoying the vibe make sure to warm yourself on their American-inspired pub nosh.

5. Junk Bar, Ashgrove

If you're looking for a venue outside the bustle of the city check out Junk Bar with its deer antlers, forest wallpaper, small palm trees, old couches and dim lamps, and listen to vinyls on an old record player. Junk Bar's main focus is its creative drinks menu, with intimate table service provided, and fresh cocktail concoctions among the offerings.

6. The Gresham, Brisbane City

Tucked away on the edge of Gresham Lane branching off Queen St, The Gresham Bar is a whisky and bourbon saloon oozing old-world charm with an eccentric touch. The upmarket drinks list will satisfy even the most avid whisky drinkers, with an extensive range of bourbons and whiskies, many of which you won't find anywhere else in Australia.

If that's not enough to get you going, check out more hideaway bars HERE.
