Sleight of hand cuts highway funding

HIGHWAY funding had become highway robbery under Wayne Swan with Bruce Highway work dealt a real cut of $41 million in last night’s Federal Budget, the LNP said today.

LNP Shadow Main Roads Minister Mark Robinson said the budget was a disaster for Queensland and the only bigger disaster was the State Roads Minister’s explanation of the cut in parliament.

Dr Robinson asked State Roads Minister Craig Wallace to explain why $326 million in work on the Bruce Highway has been axed in March and replaced with just $285 million in the Swan Budget.

“You’d reckon Queensland would get a reasonable run in Labor’s budget with Treasurer Wayne Swan, the former PM Kevin Rudd and Anna Bligh as Labor’s Federal president,” Dr Robinson said.

“What’s happened with the Bruce Highway is a typical Labor sleight of hand … take quietly with one hand, then announce less cash for the same project a few months later.

“Roads Minister Craig Wallace likes to treat Queenslanders as a pack of mugs.

“But no one is fooled by his boyish blustering.

“He and the long-term Labor government have failed Queensland and particularly regional Queenslanders.”

“Queenslanders have been 'short-changed' in the funding cuts to the Bruce Highway, and the minister has failed to stand up for Queensland.

“Instead of taking the fight for the Bruce Highway up to his Queensland Labor mates, Wayne Swan and Kevin Rudd, he remained silent.

“When Queensland needed a 'Can Do' Hummer to drive the Bruce Highway reconstruction, all we got was Wallace in a Morris Minor on a road to nowhere.”
