Smart slips to second overall

YANDINA'S Ryan Smart has lost his grip on the Australian Rally Championship lead after finishing third in the Rally of Australia.

Smart, and his co-driver John Allen, were forced to retire their Toyota Corolla in heat one with differential failure, but managed third in heat two.

Smart, pictured, finished 50 seconds behind eventual victor Justin Dowel (53min 14.5sec).

The round-three result ensured Smart slipped to second in the championship standings, 13 points behind Dowel.

There are three rounds remaining.
