Smithwick set to pack boardies for ‘Ashes’ gig on Nov 21
SCOTT Smithwick had no hesitation about umpiring the upcoming Ashes series.
The AFL Capricornia development officer and former Brothers A-grade cricketer will be at the centre of the action when the first ball is bowled of this summer's Ashes series between Australia and England.
No, Smithwick won't be officiating the first Ashes Test at the Gabba on November 21, but will instead be on XXXX Island nine days earlier in charge of a beach cricket match featuring some of Australia and England's cricketing greats.
Aussie cricket legends Allan Border, Damien Fleming and Jeff Thomson will take on the English line-up of Adam Hollioake, Gladstone Small and Robin Smith, as well as Triple M Grill Team Sydney presenters Gus Worland, Matt Johns and Mark Geyer as they compete for the XXXX GOLD Beach Cricket Trophy.
Smithwick said the opportunity to mix with some of Australian sport's greats was too good to pass up.
"It's not a bad little pick up. I was like, 'OK, I'll do it'," Smithwick said. "I can't wait. It's a chance to mix with blokes I looked up to as a kid.
"(Border) AB's the one I remember as a kid being Captain Grumpy. My first memory of cricket is AB batting at the Adelaide Oval - that still sticks in my head.
"Being chosen to take part, and be right in the thick of the action on XXXX Island will be the pinnacle of my umpiring career."
