Sneaky thief swipes purse while on hands and knees

SNEAKING along on her hands and knees to swipe a purse from another patron's handbag in the pokies room may have seemed clever at the time, but the theft was obvious when police reviewed the venue's CCTV footage.

Londell Louise Bonner of Hervey Bay pleaded guilty in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Thursday to two theft charges and failure to supply identifying details to police.

The 25-year-old stole a wallet at the Torquay Hotel on May 31 and another at the Hervey Bay Hotel on July 18.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Jeanette Grigoris said the first victim lost $30 from her wallet that was snatched and later dumped in a rubbish bin in the women's restroom.

Snr Const Grigoris said in the Hervey Bay Hotel incident, the victim placed her handbag on the floor and when police reviewed the pokies room CCTV footage they could clearly see Bonner take a wallet from the victim's bag.

Bonner stole $760 from the elderly woman's wallet.

It was noted in the police brief that Bonner told police she struggled with the use of opiates, oxycodones and morphine.

Bonner's defence solicitor Sarah Laikind said Bonner was 19 weeks pregnant with her second child.

Magistrate Graeme Tatnell ordered an eight-month suspended sentence for the two stealing offences and full restitution to the victims.

"Don't come back otherwise you're in custody," he said.

For failure to supply details, Bonner was fined $350.
