Socceroo Ryan saves a point for Brighton in EPL

SOCCEROOS goalkeeper Mat Ryan earned his corn in the dying stages of Brighton's English Premier League clash with Everton to earn a point for his club in a 1-1 draw.

Ryan stood firm in injury time at AMEX Stadium, making a string of saves, including two in one play from Kevin Mirallas, as the Toffees looked for the winner following Wayne Rooney's 90th-minute penalty equaliser.

The home team had taken the lead in the 82nd minute through Anthony Knockaert before Brighton defender Bruno caught Dominic Calvert-Lewin with an elbow in the final minute to give Rooney his chance from the spot.

The draw moves both teams on to eight points and lifts them one place in the table, Brighton to 14th and Everton to 16th.

At St Mary's Manolo Gabbiadini earned Southampton a point by scoring both goals in a 2-2 draw with Newcastle.

The visitors took the lead twice through Isaac Hayden in the first half and Ayoze Perez after the break.

But both times Italian striker Gabbiadini drew the home team level, the second from the penalty spot after Shane Long had been brought down by Florian Lejeune.

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez was disappointed his side could not give the club's travelling fans a win to smile about.

"My big disappointment was for the fans. It was a pity because we couldn't get three points so they could go back happy," he said.

"It was difficult but at least we got a point. We can be better and hopefully we will be better but we have to defend better."
