Social media elective to make teens 'work ready'

AUSTRALIAN teenagers will learn the best ways to tweak their social media profiles to enhance their employment prospects once they finish school.

Students in years 9 and 10 across the country will be able to take the new "work studies" elective, which the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority unveiled this week.

It will teach 14-, 15- and 16-year-olds what is appropriate work behaviour and what is not including how much is too much time to spend on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

It will also teach teens of online material that might deter prospective employers.

The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority chief executive Robert Randall said the subject had been designed to make kids work ready.

"In this new curriculum students learn to understand what work is, how and why it is changing, and what this means for their future in working for others or themselves," he said.

"Through a mix of applied learning and work exposure, students gain a better understanding of work and places of work."

The work studies curriculum is now available for use, but is awaiting endorsement from the Education Council.
