Sounds of jazz to fill Quay Street

THE smooth sounds of jazz will fill Rockhampton’s Quay Street next month when for the first time, the Jazz on Quay concert is held.

After 10 years, the popular Big River Jazz festival is being replaced with a refreshed, renamed and relocated open-air concert.

CQUniversity first-year student Amelia Kase is in the running to perform at the 2010 festival.

“I’ve been singing in the auditorium at university and we did a gig last weekend at a hospital fundraiser,” Amelia said.

“I’m hoping that I get chosen to perform at the jazz festival. If I don’t I’ll still be there to support everyone.”

Major attractions at the event will include Brisbane keyboarder Viv Middleton, singer Irene Bartlett and trombonist Shane Hannan. Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music jazz department group Conjazz will play at the festival along with student band Groove Confederates.

On show will be a variety of styles of jazz including contemporary, swing, funky tunes and even the smooth Brazilian bossa novas.

Tickets start from $10 for general admission, with children under 15 free.Tickets can be purchased through Capricorn Tourism, Coopers, Mark Bunts Menswear, Stewarts and www. jazzonquay.com.au.
