Speed skater ices place in winter Games

OLYMPICS: Short track speed skater Pierre Boda earned qualification yesterday for next month's Winter Olympics in Russia after beating training partner Andy Jung in a best-of-three skate-off at Melbourne's Icehouse.

The 20-year-old Aussie needed a third race to clinch the berth after Jung levelled the battle. The decider then had a dramatic aftermath when Jung was disqualified for an illegal block.

Meanwhile, Australian Olympic Committee president John Coates said the organisation would continue to liaise with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade about the security situation in Russia.

In the wake of Monday's suicide bombings that killed 16 people in the city of Volgograd, AOC president John Coates issued a statement yesterday, saying: "We will impress on our athletes DFAT's advice that they exercise a high degree of caution in Russia because of the threat of terrorist activity."
