Speeder thought police lights and sirens were for wide load
WITH lights and sirens blazing, police attempted to pull over a vehicle on the Burnett Hwy last year.
When they later intercepted the speeding vehicle, driver Daniel John Keepkie told officers he thought they were part of a wide load escort.
On Wednesday, Keepkie pleaded guilty in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court to failing to stop his vehicle when directed by police.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Manon Barwick said officers observed Keepkie's vehicle speeding along the Burnett Hwy about 4pm on November 5.
She said the officers activated the siren and lights, but abandoned their pursuit when Keepkie turned onto Gavial Gracemere Rd.
Snr Const Barwick said police pulled Keepkie over some time later when they observed him driving back along Gavial Gracemere Rd.
She said Keepkie initially told the officers he didn't see them, before telling them he thought they were part of a wide load escort.
The court heard Keepkie was left a paraplegic after a motorbike accident and drove a modified vehicle, which was confiscated for a short time after the incident.
Keepkie's defence solicitor said he had already been disqualified for six months and fined $1062 for speeding in connection with the failing to stop offence.
Magistrate Michael O'Driscoll did not record a conviction, but fined Keepkie $550.
