ST Ursula's College, Yeppoon, students were treated to a day at Great Keppel Island, all in the name of research.

As part of their tourism studies, Year 11 and 12 students travelled to Great Keppel Island on a Tourism Familiarisation experience to understand different operators and accommodation facilities.

Practical Arts head of department at the college, Mrs April Acworth, said the tour provided students with ideas and information to include in their assessment piece, a written blog.

"Keppel Konnections hosted us for the day, and Freedom Fast Cats provided our return trip to Yeppoon and a glass bottom boat ride over the reef; students were encouraged to compare and contrast operators and facilities. Students toured three different accommodation providers on the island - The Lodge, Holiday Village and Keppel Hideaway - and considered target markets for each,” said Mrs Acworth.

Students and staff were fortunate to see whales during the ferry transfers to and from the island, and a hike to Monkey Beach was rewarded with a swim in the crystal clear Keppel Island waters. "The day trip provided opportunities for the students to take notes, ask questions and experience the island as tourists, to give them first hand knowledge and plenty of ideas to fill their blogs.”
