Teen dies after stabbing attack

A TEENAGER, believed to be a local high school student, has died after being stabbed yesterday morning in what has been described as an unprovoked attack in broad daylight.

Police said the 15-year-old died just hours after being stabbed in the downstairs car park of Goldfields Plaza at about 9.15am.

Paramedics, with police assistance, resuscitated the patient at the scene and immediately transported him by ambulance to Gympie Hospital where medical staff worked frantically to save the boy's life.

A surgical team from Nambour Hospital was rushed to Gympie under police escort to operate, but the knife wound proved to be fatal and the boy died three-and-a-half hours later.

Gympie Ambulance Acting Officer in Charge Brian Lehane said the stabbed teenager suffered one severe penetrating wound to his torso.

Detective Senior Sergeant of Gympie District CIB Gregg Davey said an altercation started between two teenagers outside the Sovereign Cinema in Monkland Street.

Snr Sgt Davey said the attack appeared to be unprovoked, but it was not yet known whether the boys actually knew each other.

“The victim was assaulted and ran from his alleged attacker, who pursued the victim on foot,” Snr Sgt Davey said.

“He was chased around the top car park, down Nash Street and into the bottom car park where the victim was again attacked by the offender and received injuries that proved to be fatal.”

Snr Sgt Davey said members of the public intervened and restrained the armed offender until police arrived and took him into custody.

“They were very brave...they did the right thing.”

A 16-year-old male was being questioned in relation to the offence last night.

Snr Sgt Davey asked for anyone who witnessed or has any information regarding the attack to contact Gympie CIB on 5480 1044 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.
