Star pair named in Qld squad

CENTRAL Queensland State of Origin stars Matthew Scott and David Taylor are set to spearhead the Maroons’ assault on NSW in this year’s series.

Ilfracombe product Scott (North Queensland Cowboys) and Blackwater’s Taylor (South Sydney) were last night named in a 25-man Queensland squad in the countdown to the series opener at Suncorp Stadium on May 25.

The former St Brendan’s College schoolboy stars helped the Maroons – chasing six straight series wins in 2011 – to a 3-0 series whitewash of the Blues last year.

The Queensland squad also included Bulldogs flyer Ben Barba, who hails from Mackay.

“These are the guys who are performing well at the moment and are in the picture,” Queensland chairman of selectors Des Morris said.

“Obviously if we get a couple of injuries we might have to go outside the squad but as it stands now this is the group of players in the mix.”

Scott and Taylor are also in the mix for Australian selection ahead of next Friday night’s Test against New Zealand on the Gold Coast.
