Stockland and police join forces to target youth crime

STOCKLAND Rockhampton is working with Rockhampton police to ensure the major retail centre is a safe environment for both customers and staff.

Police yesterday met with Stockland management and social agencies to assess how to address ongoing juvenile crime and anti-social behaviour issues after reports of stealing and harassment.

A Stockland Rockhampton spokesperson said the safety and security of customers, retailers and staff was of paramount importance.

"Stockland Rockhampton has 24-7 security presence, with security officers during operating hours and also CCTV security camera monitoring," the spokesperson said.

"We are working with Rockhampton police, who are investigating the incidents which have occurred to date and will continue to increase their presence within and around the centre.

"We understand that the police are taking these issues very seriously and are increasing their presence and policing."

The spokesperson said only a tiny fraction of the several thousand people who visited the centre every week created difficulty.

"We understand that our centre is an important social and retail hub for the Rockhampton community, so banning individuals is a last resort following staff intervention and warnings," the spokesperson said.

"In the interests of our retailers and customers, we ban people for serious matters such as assault, theft and aggressive anti-social behaviour.

"We generally expect minors, aged 12 or younger, are accompanied by an older child or adult.

"If anyone is concerned about their welfare they should contact centre management, speak with our security officers who patrol the centre or contact the police immediately."

The spokesperson thanked the community for its ongoing support.

"We are grateful for the way Rockhampton and the region has embraced Stockland as part of their community for over a decade. Stockland and our retailers have invested in the centre over many years to continually improve what we offer and make it a special place for everyone to enjoy."
