Christmas sales up

THERE were no grinches in Rockhampton stores this year, as traders experienced one of their best Christmas seasons yet.

Mark Bunt, owner of Mark Bunt Menswear, said with the weather on the region's side, December sales for his East St store were up compared to the previous year.

"Christmas has been kind to us here," he said yesterday.

"With a full week's trade leading into Christmas we've been very busy and are still having a busy time now."

Mr Bunt wasn't the only Rockhampton store to do well.

Kerrie Wooler, manager of Robins Kitchen at Stockland Rockhampton, said the Christmas period had been "record breaking" for the company.

"The minute December 1 hit it's been full on," she said.

"Our store's definitely a lot emptier."

My Sister's House owner Nicole Gillespie said consumer confidence was back after the January floods.

"There's a different vibe to last year; everyone was ready to let loose," she said.

Ms Gillespie said people had forgotten about the recession for once and were ready to spend.

"Tourists are back and stopping in Rockhampton," she said.

"And without the flooding they can actually get to our front door."

Even Suna Shoes had a good run, with its best Christmas sales yet, manager Wanda Dike said.

"It's usually not a busy time of year for us; we're more popular in the races season," she said.

"We've been here three and a half years and this is definitely our best Christmas."

Ms Dike hoped the good trading would continue into the new year.
