Storms boost monthly rainfall

DECEMBER was much wetter than average in Rockhampton.

A series of thunderstorms, which started halfway through the month, boosted rainfall to a monthly total of 152mm, 49% above the average for December.

We had rain on 15 days (10 is the norm).

The highest daily rainfall was 45.2mm on December 12 which means that particular day was wet, but nowhere near as soaking as December 20 in 1973 when the city was lashed from morning till night with a staggering 271.5mm.

But it was a wet year.

The city received 901.6mm in the 12 months to the end of December, 102mm (14%) more than normal.

The average daily maximum temperature last month was 30.6C, 1.5C below the average.

Nightime temperatures were also slightly down on average at 21C.

During a storm on December 11, one gust of wind was recorded at 96kmh.

If January conforms with the long-term average, Rockhampton can expect daily maximums of 32C, minimums of 22C and 126.5mm of rain.
