Stoyle chases victory in second round of Roxy Pro

BUDERIM'S Dimity Stoyle's golden run came to an end yesterday however she remains alive in the Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast.

The 21-year-old finished third in her round 1 heat of the ASP Women's World Championship Tour opener at Rainbow Bay.

In clean 1m swells, Stoyle could only manage a two-wave total of 8.54, beaten by five-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore (16.84) and American Sage Erickson (11.90).

Stoyle will now meet Australian and world championship No.4 Tyler Wright in the second round.

Stoyle had been on fire recently, winning the six-star Hunter Ports Women's Classic - her first senior ASP victory - and the Roxy Pro Trials, which earned her a berth in the main draw of the WCT event.

While she is still in the draw, she was clearly out-classed by defending Roxy Pro champion Gilmore.

"There's always a bit of pressure at the first event, especially since I live here and want to do well," Gilmore said.

"When the waves are good like today though, that pressure just goes out the window and all my focus is just on having fun.

"The girls this year are probably better than any year in the past so every heat is difficult.

"It's exciting though and hopefully it continues to push the level of women's surfing."

Stoyle is this year hoping for a top six finish on the world qualifying tour which would earn her a spot on the 2014 world tour.

Other winners yesterday included Australian world No.2 Sally Fitzgibbons, France's Pauline Ado, Hawaii's Coco Ho and Carissa Moore and the USA's Lakey Peterson, who stood out with a round-high two-wave total of 19.13.

Coolum's Julian Wilson is scheduled to meet Damien Hobgood and Adam Melling in the first round of the Quiksilver Pro.
