Stuck pup safe after Weetbix fix

A PUPPY trapped in a Rockhampton stormwater drain for 24 hours was lucky to be rescued on Tuesday.

The 10-week-old German shepherd pup was rescued by RSPCA Queensland senior regional inspector Shayne Towers-Hammond after it slipped down the grate and into the drain system on the corner of Ford and High streets.

Inspector Towers-Hammond said the puppy was lucky it was found by a resident and was glad to get the male puppy out before yesterday’s storms, as he could have drowned.

“It’s a beautiful puppy and if the people next-door hadn’t have raised the alarm, who knows what could have happened,” he said.

The puppy was enticed out with some Weetbix before inspector Towers-Hammond went into the drain to pull him out.

The “sizable” gap in the drain then was covered up with bricks.

The puppy was not injured and was returned to its owners three hours later.

Inspector Towers-Hammond said if the pup was micro chipped the owners could have located it and the puppy could have been immediately returned.
