Man caught driving 163km in 100km zone

DRIVING at 163kmh in a 100kmh zone has prompted a Rockhampton police officer to label the driver as "stupid".

Almost 200 people were caught speeding over the first weekend of the school holidays, but the high speed on Friday on the highway was notable.

The driver was immediately suspended from driving for six months and fined $1099.

Rockhampton police Senior Sergeant Ewan Findlater said extremely high speeds were disappointing to see on the roads.

"It's a stupid speed to be travelling at," he said.

Snr Sgt Findlater said within 48 hours, a fatality and a serious traffic crash had already blown his hopes of an incident-free holiday period out of the water.

He said the first weekend of the Christmas road safety campaign was riddled with incidences, including the very high speed.

"We have written over 280 infringement notices since the operation began at 12.01am on Saturday morning," Snr Sgt Findlater said.

"Of those, over 190 were for speeding."

As well as speeding offences, drink and drug drivers were being targeted.

"We have done over 3800 breath tests during the first weekend, of which 10 drink drivers were detected," Snr Sgt Findlater said.

"We also (detected) nine drug drivers."
