DAVID Jones ambassador Jesinta Franklin says evening wear is getting an '80s makeover.
"The velvets, the satins, the exaggerated shoulders - this is my favourite trend for spring because it's so much fun," she says.
"It's a look that has to be worn with confidence. Love what you wear and just own it."
Jesinta, who confesses that an '80s obsession is also taking over her Spotify playlist, prefers a powerful silhouette, with jumpsuits providing an all-in-one statement.
Shoulder pads are back (a tricky trend Carla Zampatti incorporates with eternal elegance) and so are single-shoulder silhouettes - Lioness does an inexpensive version that ticks two trend boxes.
Black looks particularly ravishing in a plush velvet, or dare to disco in a molten metallic cocktail dress.
Siren-red hues suit the bold brief, but a fabric with sheen will paint even pretty pastels in a fresh light.
Accessories are an inexpensive way to dip a toe in the trend (introduce velvet shoes or a glam clutch to your current cocktail crop) or help you embrace the fashion climate in all its glory.
Earrings are the place to make a statement, with Oscar De La Renta's sparkly shoulder-dusters epitomising midnight glamour.
