Coast to farewell Matthew Barclay

SUNSHINE Coast lifesavers and supporters of lifesavers are being urged to turn out in force to celebrate the life of Matthew Barclay at Caloundra tomorrow.

Marochydore Surf Lifesaving Club president Tim Ryan said the celebration of Matt's life would be an opportunity for the whole Coast to show its support for the lifesaving movement here.

Matthew, who was 14, died while competing at the Australian Surf Lifesaving Titles at Kurrawa Beach last Wednesday.

He was a very promising young lifesaver, a well loved Siena Catholic College student, an older brother to sister Lauren and much loved son of Stephen and Donna Barclay.

His funeral will be held at Our Lady of the Rosary Church on Edmund St, Moffat Beach, from 11am.

The club invited its members and the wider community to attend and show their support for Matt's grieving family.

"We are all still struggling with the tragic loss of club member Matt Barclay and for those who are able, I ask you to come along and support the Barclay family as this is an important part of the healing process," the club posted on Facebook.

Mr Ryan said the funeral service would be followed by a wake at the Black Swan Room at the clubhouse for club members while young lifesavers and their families will be catered for on the beach with a barbecue and other activiities tailored for children.

Mr Ryan urged people to carpool going to the funeral service. Car parking will be catered for on the adjoining school oval.
