Yeehaw! Cowboy fans keen to see team in Rocky
THE good times keep rolling for arguably Rockhampton's biggest Cowboys supporter Leslie Horstman.
Leslie was upbeat yesterday after hearing his premiership winning favourite side will be making their way to Rocky.
And he's not the only one seemingly over the moon.
An online poll of nearly 400 Morning Bulletin readers found the Cowboys are CQ's favourite team - at least at the moment.
The Townsville-based club scored more than 200 votes, well ahead of traditional NRL powerhouse the Brisbane Broncos who came in second with 20% of the vote (see graphic on this page).
Leslie, who decorated the nature strip outside of his house in support of his team ahead of their grand final win, has been a dedicated fan since the club formed in 1995.
He said he couldn't wait until the team came to town.
"It would be great to see them in person, especially for the kids," he said.
Leslie said even though he was excited to see his team in the flesh, there might be some local upset with Bronco fans.
"I would say we're a bit of a half and half town when it comes to footy," he said.
"I mean some people go for Broncos and others go for Cowboys because Rocky itself is half way between Brisbane and Townsville."
Leslie said he felt Rockhampton was secretly full of Cowboys supporters.
"Even though there is some rivalry between fans, in the end I reckon Broncos supporters will probably swap their jerseys for a Cowboys one," he said.
"I can't wait for them to be here, it's going to be great for the town and our local league."
A Cowboys spokesperson yesterday said Rockhampton was very much part of the club's footprint.
He said one of the major reasons Rockhampton was on the list of cities to visit was due to the recruitment academy sessions which were run here using local talent.
