Suspended police officer charged with more offences

A POLICE officer, stood down in February over an alleged fight at a Hervey Bay pub, has been arrested and charged with further offences.

Constable Marc Withyman, a general duties officer based at Maryborough Police Station, was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and attempt to pervert justice on Tuesday.

In a statement released yesterday by Queensland Police, the 34-year-old Booral resident was said to have been off duty when he allegedly assaulted a 30-year-old man and "interfered with an investigation".

Withyman had already been suspended without pay after he was charged with the common assault of a man at the Beach House Hotel in February.

Police allege Withyman was with his wife and at least one other woman when he took offence to a comment and hit another patron.

Officers from the Ethical Standards Committee were called back to the region after a fresh complaint was received on Saturday morning.

Withyman was released from the watch house last night and given notice to appear in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on April 24.

A Queensland Police representative said "in keeping with our commitment to high standards of behaviour, transparency and accountability, we undertake to inform the public when an officer faces disciplinary processes involving stand down or suspension" but no further comment could be made.
